Commission FAQ'S
1. How much does a Commission Painting cost?
Great question! I price out each Commission Painting by size and complexity. In regards to size I charge by a linear inch calculation. For example: If the desired size of your painting is a 16" x 12" then I would add 16" + 12" to get the linear inch total of 28". The number 28 is then the number I multiply with my Linear Inch Base Price which is $16.00.
Base Calculation:
16" + 12" = 28"
28" x $16 = $448.00
So, $448.00 would be the base cost of a 16" x 12" Oil Painting on stretched canvas.
PRICE LIST per Canvas Size
Landscape /Portrait (Rectangle)
Size Price (CAD)
8" x 10" = $288.00 ($85 deposit)
11" x 14" = $400.00 ($140 deposit)
12" x 16" = $448.00 ($135 deposit)
16" x 20" = $576.00 ($170 deposit)
18" x 24" = $672.00 ($200 deposit)
20" x 24" = $704.00 ($210 deposit)
12" x 36" = $768.00 ($230 deposit)
24" x 30" = $864.00 ($260 deposit)
24" x 36" = $960.00 ($290 deposit)
30" x 40" = $1120.00 ($340 deposit)
24" x 48" = $1152.00 ($345 deposit)
36" x 48" = $1344.00 ($400 deposit)
48" x 60" = $1728.00 ($520 deposit)

***The above photo is just examples of size comparison. I do not yet have access to 20" x 30" or 40" x 60" stretched gallery wrapped canvases. The closest to those sizes that I do have access to would be 24" x 30" and 48" x 60" respectively.***
I have plans to eventually build my own stretched gallery wrapped canvases so that I can have access to any size I want, but in the meantime I depend on the availability of a supplier which could be subject to change at anytime without notice, like anything else. I will eventually bridge that gap by extending my ability and service to my own hand crafted stretcher bars. I will send out notice when these changes occur.
2. Does this include shipping and handling?
Shipping and Handling is not included because each piece will vary so much in size, weight, and packaging that it will reflect in the cost. This is will be added to the final price.
3. Are there any extra costs?
There can be.
If the picture you want has a lot of extraordinary, time consuming detail (for example: extensive bead-work on clothing, a very large gathering of people, or anything that requires a lot of extra time) I will add a small fee to the base cost to cover my material but mainly my time. Details are great and really bring a painting to life - and I have no problem incorporating them - but they can be very time consuming.
Also, if my clients ask for special materials or expensive types of stretched canvas or other surfaces that require me to either build them or buy them (if the cost is above what I would normally pay for the Professionally Stretched canvas I usually buy) I will add that total to the cost.
But be sure that these details will be discussed in full upon agreement of the Commission piece.
4. Is there a contract written up between Artist and Client to sign?
Yes there is! Its best for both of us to feel that the desired outcome of the Artwork is fully understood and agreed upon. When it is in writing and signed then we can rest easy because the details are aligned such as date of completion, materials used, and final investment price.
5. Is there a deposit?
There sure is! A deposit helps me to guarantee a time slot in my schedule for your Commission Piece and helps me to buy supplies. The deposit is a base of 1/3 of the final price. And it absolutely is deducted from your final price. So, a $1000 final piece price requires a $330.00 deposit and when the artwork is complete the balance owing would be the remaining $670.00 plus shipping and handling. I accept email transfers and Pay Pal for the time being, but will soon accept credit cards
6. What materials do you use?
On average I use oil based paints and professionally stretched canvas. But I am open to using other materials such as acrylics paints or hardwood panel. These things can be discussed.
7. How long does it take until the painting will be done?
Oil based paints need to cure. They can be dry to the touch within a few days, but they need 2 - 3 weeks (more if the paint is thicker) to cure enough to add the varnish, which will need to dry for about a week or so. It is very important when shipping a new painting that the paint is dry, otherwise it will be damaged in shipping. So, it is best to keep these time lines in mind when ordering your Commission Piece!
Oil based paints are what I prefer to work with for realism artwork. I don't feel that acrylic has the same open time for me to work with it. But I am open to trying acrylic on other kinds of artwork if it is specifically requested and the piece is right.
8. What photos should I send you as reference?
It is important that the reference photos you send me are as clear and high resolution as possible. In order to paint in realism I need to be able to see as much detail as possible. If you only have a paper photograph you can scan it and send it via email. More than one photo of the subject can help with accuracy as well, in order to learn more about my subject, but it's not necessary.
9. What sizes of canvas are available?
We can discuss a general size that you are looking for based on what is usually available for purchase. Generally the sizes available can vary quite a bit.
